Fun Facts (from 50th Reunion)

 

So you think you know the MHS Class of ’66?

1) I am unable to attend the reunion because I’m getting married on Sept. 10.

2) I was born with five fingers and a thumb on each hand.

3) I have been making Native American Dreamcatchers and jewelry as a hobby for 25 years.

4) I grew up as a juvenile delinquent and did time in reform school before I was sentenced by thecourt to go to Murray.

5) I climbed ten mountains in the Alps.

6) I live in Como Park and my partner’s last name is Como.

7) I was the last person to date Terry Hart before he married Mary Hart (of Entertainment Tonight).

8) I went down the Minnehaha Creek rapids in a kayak a few weeks ago.

9) I met the Dali Lama while I was staying at the Princess Hotel in San Francisco, though I passed on meeting Richard Gere.

10) I played in the same piano recital with my future spouse eight years before we met.

11) I toured China as part of a delegation hosted by the Chinese government.

12) I know how to install a 5 wire submersible pump.

13) I started a modern dance company in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

14) I was going to tell you about nuclear weapons, but I do not know if it is declassified or not so I better not. What I can tell you is that my father was in the first graduating class from Murray and my brother was in the last class to graduate from Murray.

15) I have eaten haggis with the Scots and thrown a boomerang with the Aboriginals.

16) As an adult I gained four step siblings – and all graduated from Murray.

17) I'm very skilled at cutting extension cords with my hedge trimmer and chain saw.

18) I scrubbed Catalina Island Camp toilets with actress Laura Dern.

19) My two children were born on the same day, seven years apart, on the 7th of June, almost to the minute.

20) I had dinner with Vincent Price in the early 80's when he came to Des Moines to do the intros for a bunch of old horror movies they ran on Iowa Public Television.

21) I attempted to establish a world record for the longest played racquetball game. We played for

36 hours and submitted to the Guinness Book of World records only to have it rejected because racquetball was not an international sport.

22) I drove a midget racing car on the Manteca Speedway. I had to wear a fire suit and a helmet (both of which were too big) and the helmet kept slipping down my face. There was no one else on the track so it was really fun - finally got brave enough to hit 85 mph!

23) I took care of Mr. Rossini’s mom in a nursing home when he was the Principal at Central High School. What a different man - she spoke, he jumped!

24) I was in school for a total of 18 years after high school and currently run a psychiatry clinic for Spanish speaking immigrants.

25) Because I had swimming first hour and didn’t want my hair ruined, I lied about having my period as often as I could and then filled in with doctor’s notes claiming sore throats or ear infections. Miss Lightbourn got mad and flunked me.

26) I married a lady who can milk cows by hand.

27) I was living on the beach in Cannes during the film festival when invited by a new acquaintance and his buddies to attend the premier of “Easy Rider.” My patron was Dennis Hopper and his friends were Peter Fonda, and Jack Nicholson.

28) I rode a Skyrail 4.5 miles to the top of the Kurunda rainforest and cuddled with a koala bear.

29) I posed for a life-size nude photograph which was exhibited in an art gallery.

30) I am a certified breath integration practitioner.

31) This will be my tenth year attending the annual John Denver "Aspen In October" festival in Colorado.

32) I was in the movie “Funny Lady” with Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif.

33) I worked full time for 3-1/2 years driving a forklift at a food processing plant while commuting to college and caring for my daughter.

34) After my mother died I considered getting a piano. However my small over 100-year-old house didn't have any wall long enough to accommodate one so I bought a Celtic harp instead.

35) I play a minimum of 150 rounds of golf a year.

36) In 3rd grade I was a courtroom judge on a one time educational TV program.

37) I live on a street that was named after me.

38) I was at a Murray hockey game in 10th grade when the puck flew into bleachers at Aldrich Arena and hit me in mouth causing split lip, broken tooth, root canal and crown. Ouch! Also, I was teaching Connie Parrot how to hit a backhand tennis shot not knowing she was directly in line of the racket. Poor Connie got a split lip and needed a root canal. Ouch again!

39) I attended eight schools before Murray – my favorite school – since we moved around so much as I was growing up. Now the third generation in my family is attending Murray.

40) At their bedtime, I read the entire Tolkien "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to the children, one chapter at a time. (Hint: Earlier in the day I read the same chapter so all of the characters voices would comfortably be in place for that nights read… Good Grief.)

41) I’m still waiting to grow up . . . love gettin' down to Rap music!
